About Charlie Black

Charlie Black Charlie Black was raised in Chicago, Illinois and has been painting and drawing since his early childhood. Raised in Chicago, he spent many summers with grandparents in Walnut Grove, Mississippi.

A husband and father, Black paints to express himself and chronicle his view of life. He uses pastels, watercolors, and stained glass and wields a vibrant palette of intense colors. He enjoys capturing people in both urban and rural settings and making the ordinary extraordinary.

He has an international clientele that is drawn to his warm, uncomplicated, and unpretentious images. Collectors have compared his style to that of Jacob Lawrence and Archibald Motley.

Educated at Savannah State College in Savannah, Georgia, Black’s work has been featured in several exhibits and collections, including 2013 Official Artist for Chicago Jazz Festival, 2012 Best of Show and Best Pastel Artist for Barrington’s Art in the Barn (also 2013 Best Pastel), Dallas Academy of Arts and Letters, Gold Coast Art Fair, Northern Trust Bank, Kingstree Trading, art calendars published by WGCI Radio Station and Kraft Foods, and MSI’s Black Creativity.

Artist’s Statement

My work is very straightforward and uncomplicated. I enjoy capturing nostalgic memories of my childhood as well as stirring images from both rural and urban surroundings that everyone can relate to. From children playing simple games that we all remember to urban jazz and street musicians to rural farm scenes – the warmth, flavor, and spice of the human experience continues to inspire my work. I consider my work visual soul food and want the vibrancy and warmth of my images to touch all people.
